This year, the country turns 250. And this year, I turn 50 summers of watching fireworks over this lake.

It started in the '80s — out on the water by boat with friends and family, anchored off Lake Norman Marina, watching the sky light up over the lake we'd spent the whole weekend living on. And it really was the whole weekend: cookouts, tubing, skiing, swimming — the kind of hot, sunburned, water-logged Independence Day that defines summer in the South.

Friends & family, lakeside — the tradition that never gets old

My daddy was the captain every single day on that boat — but the 4th was always his favorite. It was the one day he'd light the fireworks himself, right from the boat, while the rest of us watched. Every Stevenson grandkid grew up this way — on the water, watching Daddy light the sky on the 4th of July. And every year, without fail, he had his own tradition within the tradition — the infamous day-trip to South Carolina for fireworks, because nothing — and I mean nothing — was going to outdo the show he'd find there. To this day, that's still the bar.

By the 2000s, the view changed — still by boat, but now watching the Peninsula fireworks light up the water from a different angle, with a new generation of family and friends along for the ride. And since 2004, our own corner of Huntersville has carried the torch — a neighborhood 4th that's become its own tradition: the parade, the cookouts, the same brutal summer heat, and a finale that our kids — and now our kids' friends — have grown up under.

Different decades. Different docks. Same lake. This 4th of July, as the whole country marks 250 years, I'll be marking my own milestone too — 50 years of fireworks, family, and Lake Norman. However you celebrate this weekend — by boat, by grill, or by the curb watching the parade go by — I hope it's a good one. 🎇

After almost 40 years on this lake, here's the insider guide nobody hands you when you move here — the real answer to "where do I actually watch the fireworks?"

🚤 By Boat — The Best Seat in the House

Nothing beats anchoring on the water. Cocktail Cove, near Trump National Golf Club, is the lake's busiest and most legendary spot — boats raft up shoulder to shoulder for the show. The Peninsula Club and Lake Norman Yacht Club both run private member shows that are easily visible (and arguably better) from open water nearby — no membership required if you're floating just offshore. Arrive by mid-afternoon to claim your spot; this is the busiest boating night of the year on LKN, so go slow, run your nav lights, and watch your wake.

🏖️ By Land — Public Access, No Boat Required

Bailey Road Park (Cornelius) hosts the Charlotte Symphony with a fireworks finale and a drone show — bring a blanket and claim grass early. Ramsey Creek Park and other public waterfront parks around Cornelius and Mooresville offer open water views without ever stepping on a dock. Downtown Davidson's Town Green is the small-town option — parade, concert on the green, and a relaxed evening that doesn't require fighting lake traffic at all. Birkdale Village in Huntersville runs a full family day — live music, face painting, a bike parade — capped off with its own fireworks show, easily walkable with kids. And Northstone in Huntersville puts on a beloved neighborhood show of its own, drawing crowds from well beyond the community for one of the area's most underrated displays.

🚗 By Car — The Secret Locals Use

Skip the boat traffic entirely — many bridges and high points around the lake offer surprisingly good sightlines once the show starts. Neighborhoods on bluffs near Westport, The Peninsula, and waterfront communities in Huntersville often catch multiple shows at once from a single driveway — ask a local before you assume you need to be on the water.
